PNG Hekari FC produced a determined performance against league leaders Auckland FC, but two goals deep into stoppage time proved heartbreaking as the New Zealand side maintained their perfect record in the OFC Pro League.
The match saw Hekari, still searching for their first points of the competition, take on an Auckland FC team who had won all three of their Round 1 fixtures. Despite the difference in league standings, Hekari showed resilience and spirit throughout the contest.
A strong crowd turned out to witness Auckland FC’s historic debut as the country’s first professional football club, though the opening half unfolded in a cautious and tightly contested manner.
Veteran striker Raymond Gunemba, making his first start of the campaign, brought energy and intensity to Hekari’s attack, pressing high and keeping Auckland’s defence under pressure.
At the other end, Auckland’s James Bayliss appeared to have opened the scoring, but the goal was ruled out for offside — a decision later confirmed by VAR.
Hekari were grateful to goalkeeper Dave Tomare, who delivered a superb double save just before halftime, denying Aiden Carey twice from close range to keep the match level.
The half ended with a tense moment when Rex Naime was initially shown a red card for a late challenge. Following a VAR review, the decision was reduced to a yellow, allowing Hekari to continue with a full squad.
Despite the late disappointment, Hekari’s performance showed encouraging signs as the team continues its campaign in the historic inaugural OFC Pro League.
