PNG Hekari Football Club is excited to announce a new chapter in its history as it transitions into the inaugural OFC Professional League, set to commence in January 2026. The club, formerly known as Hekari United Football Club, has updated its name to reflect the unity and national pride of Papua New Guinea.

“PNG itself represents unity — PNG is United,” said General Manager Wira Wama.

“This change is more than a name; it’s about bringing together fans and players from across the country while taking our football to a higher level both regionally and internationally."

Vonnie Kapi Nato, Team Director, highlighted the club’s commitment to player development across all levels.

“I am responsible for overseeing the Academy, our Premier Soccer League team, and our women’s program. I’m deeply committed to developing our players because strong preparation is essential if we want to succeed at the professional level.

"The transition has been challenging, but this is a positive step for our country. When our players are selected for the national team, it reflects their performance at the highest level, and that brings me great joy.”

Vonnie Kapi Nato added that the club has actively recruited talented players from Kokopo, Vanimo, and other centers, emphasizing discipline, commitment, and passion for national football.

“We work constantly. On the field, in the camp, and in instilling discipline. Our focus is building football, building players, and building a future for our country. Everything we do is for the nation, not for personal gain. I sincerely thank all families, clubs, and associations for allowing their talented players to join us.”

PNG Hekari FC continues to prioritize its academy programs, with active centers in Port Moresby, Vanimo, and Kokopo, and plans to expand across the country.

“Our academy kids will grow through the system, progress to the Premier League, and eventually join the Pro Team,” said Wira Wama.

“This pathway is not only for Hekari but for Papua New Guinea football as a whole.”

The club has also worked closely with other PSL clubs to select and integrate outstanding players into the squad.

Wira Wama emphasized the importance of cooperation:

“For PNG Premier Soccer League clubs that released their players, we provide compensation as recognition for their efforts. Opportunities like this benefit the players and strengthen football in PNG.”

The club’s technical team brings international and regional expertise.

“We are proud to introduce Marcos Gusmao from São Paulo, Brazil, who has coached PNG teams twice before,” Wira Wama said.

“Alongside him are brothers Jerry Sam and Jerry Allen from the Solomon Islands, who bring a wealth of experience in futsal, beach soccer, and 11-a-side football. We are thrilled to have them guiding our Pro League team, youth, and women’s programs.”

The management team, led by General Manager Wira Wama and Team Director Vonnie Kapi Nato, remains committed to excellence, discipline, and player development.

They thanked their loyal sponsors, Minerals Resources Development Company (MRDC), Petroleum Resources Kutubu (PRK), and Kutubu Security Services (KSS), who continue to support the club, helping PNG Hekari FC enter this new era of professional football.

The club is focused on building a strong, united squad that represents Papua New Guinea at the professional and international levels.

“The future is bright, for the club, for the players, and for everyone involved with PNG Hekari FC,” said Wira Wama.

“We ask all fans to support our players as they take this exciting step forward for PNG football.”
